The Friends of Durham Woodland Cemetery is a charitable organisation formed in 2018 to work with the County Council to cherish this beautiful and peaceful place.
Our constitution commits us to furthering the conservation, protection and improvement of the cemetery, promoting its history and heritage. We aim to care for it as an area of natural woodland and a place of solace and consolation. Our volunteer trustees and members work together to this end, raising any concerns with the County Council, who own the site.
Over the years we have provided seating, repaired damage after storms and worked to make the lodge, which we manage, an attractive place for gatherings. We strive always to retain the natural appearance of the woodland, so that it remains a living memorial to the people buried there.
We are ready to help with any queries about plaques for the graves or other questions that may arise. We try always to be compassionate and aware of the needs of those using the site, as most of us are also linked to it by bereavement. Membership of the Friends is open to anyone who feels an affinity with this special place and would like to help us protect and care for it.
